Recently Apple announced that they are planning to enable a microchip driven security within their next devices. you can get the chip surgically set prior the launch (probably with Apple certified surgeons ☺). No seriously though - the support is already there and some people are starting to use it - see this article here.
This is nothing new of course -- dogs have been micro-chipped for quite awhile now and there is a pub in Scotland (here) that has offered a microchip to their customers to make a pint purchasing easier already some 9 years ago - chip is embedded in your forearm and scanned by the cashier. You can put more cash on it by the pub cashier as well.
The next stage of wearable software/hardware is going to be also surgically embedded into your body; these allow you to change color of the bead in your skin or earring. Or inform you of an incoming message.
For health organisations this will be revolutionary; patients with existing conditions can have monitors of all kinds sending vital statistics to your doctor. For example a cardiac arrest has some known warning signs that when received in time could trigger an ambulance being sent before the actual heart attack happened.
There could be significant savings of money and life with these kinds of technologies. But of course human nature is such that some silly inventions are bound to also emerge and probably become the widest usage.
There is one other thing; apparently US military is working on some serious miniaturization techniques that are going to be shared with commercial sectors (they need the money you see) in very near future - which will probably launch an avalanche of new surgically embedded devices. Sorry but I could not find the original article (it was in Yahoo technology news but has been removed), but here is something similar.
The future is here folks!
