CIO Summit 2012 was just held in Auckland's Skycity convention centre. I've been going for years now and find it great value; as a matter of fact if I could only attend one conference in a year, CIO summit would be it.
This year there were some 450 delegates and probably around 250 vendors. Gala dinner attracted almost 800 people and was hosted by Leading Men; opera/musical 4-men group from Oz. I love their style of music so great fun for me.
Highlight speakers for me were CIO for New York Stock market, IDC US President and CIO from NZFS Alma Hong. The biggest stinker was CIO from Facebook with VMWare CIO close second.
Key message from stock market CIO was to challenge everything; he was a fascinating speaker and full of great ideas for change and how to make things better. Hard to believe for a guy from his industry.
Key message from IDC president was the 3rd platform; cloud, mobility, BYOD and big data. Yes we have all heard this before, but it is really happening folks so get off your butt and start preparing for it, it is here sooner than you think.
Alma used CHCH as an example on how different govt agencies can work together, what were the lessons learned, what can be done better and about the human factors. She was very entertaining, spot on/topical and used Geospatial - you cannot go wrong with these ingredients.
Facebook CIO did not tell us anything - cracked a couple of jokes, but even if he talked about their current challenges (as we tend to follow US it would have been a glimpse one year ahead) or what findings they have from their data, challenges for their industry would have been good. I got the feeling he was a bean counter in heart, not a real CIO.
VMWare CIO was just plain boring guy; to the life of me I could get enough interest to concentrate on what he was saying - it might have been good, but if you lack personality you should not present.
Best thing in the conference - networking and some outstanding vendor stands; the difference with this conference is that vendors don't just put any sales guys in stands, but usually management level with strategy and technology mix. So talking to these guys actually gives you a lot of value.
Networking with your peers is always good; met a lot of people who are usually very hard to nail down, and got introduced to some new great contacts. Like U said overall a great conference.
And I won an Air swimmer (shark), now just have to figure out what to do with it.
