SAP HANA & Google Maps - Your (US) World (21st April 2013)
This tool merges together the power of SAP HANA on analysing US Census data on fly (almost 70 million rows) via a Google Maps interface. You navigate around the US map and the number below shows the census demographics you've selected (default is population) via the button on right under the map. Change it to anything you want (like % of post-graduates) and you see it instantly updated. Launch the tool here.
Note that if you answer yes to the question on using your PC's location, you get located to your country rather than to US and as this tool only has US data in it, you will have to navigate manually to US (or via search, just type in a name of a city in US you know).
Also if you want to learn more about SAP HANA, then look at this tool; it is called conversation heat map and shows you current tweets around the world on discussions around SAP HANA.

Microsoft SharePoint 2013 killer features (13th February 2013)
SharePoint - the #1 Microsoft product we all love to hate; product that is easy to get started but requires a tremendous amount of knowledge and effort to master, maintain and administer. Almost everybody uses it, in various ways:
Read the original article on 7 things about SharePoint you should know here.
- most common use is as a website framework
- some use it as a portal; for searching (SEO) and for launching functionality/web parts
- some use it as a document/content management system
- some use it for business Intelligence, analytics and (management) reporting

HTML 5 Compliance and Test (30th November 2012)
Here are 2 utilities for you to use and not anything you need to install, mainly URLs to access and consume these services.
The first service is a great one to view what your personal browser UI compatibility is, so here you go - check this one, it tells you whether the web browser you use is good enough for the HTML 5 goodness. The score is explained in great detail including all the geeky/developer details for some 30 categories which of relevant for geospatial are parsing rules (SVG), canvas, storage, files, WebGL, location/orientationweb applications, user interaction and elements.
Also some simple geospatial interfaces to forms, fields and session history,
If you are a serious web geek though (or your boss has tasked you to figure out what works in future), you need to know this website; it tells you the real detail across all major browsers, CSS, JS APIs etc.

Fiddler 2 Web Debugger (15th July 2012)
The best free web debugger out there - runs on Windows and requires .NET, but regardless an essential tool. Point it to your web site and start debugging - it is that easy. You can download it here.
One of the neat features is that it can show exactly where all the time is used when you interact with your browser app; for example in mapping every time we pan a map, fiddler records how long each individual tile takes to arrive down to milliseconds. And we can even view the actual time image in a image tab.

Compuware dynaTrace AJAX Edition (12th July 2012)
This is one of the greatest tool for testing how well your website or browser application performs. Compuware has a free version and a commercial version available - start with free just to get an idea how your site/app performs and some info on how to improve it. Before you know, it becomes invaluable and you'll buy it.
Every development company developing on browser space (all of them?) should have this, truly a great tool. See the overview and features here, differences between free and commercial version here and download the free version here. Then go and point it on your sites/apps. You won't be disappointed :)

HTML 5 and hover over - match made in heaven? (27th May 2012)
GIS Cloud team has upgraded their map rendering software from Adobe Flash to HTML 5 Canvas. As part of that work they enhanced the engine to render large vector data sets on fly. The end result is something mind boggling and will clearly be the way of the future.
Click this link to read the article and try 4 of their demos. And this link will take you to their application that allows you to try out even more interfaces (try out the UK water - it is cool).
For those of you who are not GIS knowledgeable and are wondering what the big deal is; for example the UK road map shows 2 million vectors on map enabling hover over at all times. Zoom out to view whole UK and then hover over anywhere in UK - the road segment gets highlighted and the corresponding metadata accessed real time.
